Are those celebrities who are getting married?! This was the question that my classmates and I were asked more than once when we photographed the wedding of Joanne and Jason on June 21. Passersby near the Harbour Banquet and Conference Centre in Oakville where we took the formal wedding pictures were convinced this couldn't possibly be a regular bride and groom with almost a dozen photographers hovering around them. Each of us had assigned jobs that day. In the morning my classmates Charro, Gigi and I spent time at the bride's house and photographed her and her bridesmaids getting ready for Joanne's big day. In the evening I also had the chance to capture the beautifully decorated reception hall at the Harbour Banquet and Conference Center!
For one of the last assignments in my Wedding Photography II course we spent an evening photographing wedding details such as bridal shoes, jewelry and party favors among others. The centre piece of attention, however, was an amazing three-tiered wedding cake baked by one of my classmates, Charro March. She had spent hours baking and decorating the previous days and I was fascinated by the intricacy of the decorations. I told her there'd be another career for her if she wanted to! After the others and I spent a good amount of time capturing this elaborate cake it was finally time to get a taste of it, too. Three tiers - chocolate, vanilla and lemon - one more delicious than the other!
I’m a little behind with my blogging but I don’t want to miss sharing a few photos from the session with Carny and Joe. On May 24th my wedding photography course from Sheridan met on campus in Oakville for an engagement photo shoot. Well, in the case of Carny and Joe it wasn’t exactly that as they already got married last year in November. But since they didn’t really have any engagement photos done they were excited about the idea of making up for that! I for my part was thrilled to have them! They are so genuinely kind and it was wonderful to see how they connect with each other make each other laugh!
Wow - what an eventful Saturday morning! I had met up with my classmates and instructor from my Sheridan wedding photography course at the RBG in Burlington for another fun photo shoot. Through friends I had found a wonderful couple, Sarah and Keith, who were prepared to be my partner's and my models for this morning. Those two were great fun to be with! We had just found a lovely location in the gardens under some big trees, done a few nice shots when suddenly the unthinkable happened: after taking a picture of Sarah from a flower bed (naughty) I tripped - probably over my own feet - and went flying headlong to the ground!! Camera, camera, protect the camera!!! was the last thing I could think. The little finger on my left hand took most of the abuse and was twisted into a weird and unrecognizable shape when I got up. Broken - as they later told me at the hospital. What a shame that the photo shoot had to come to such an abrupt end for me! Thank you Sarah and Keith for coming out to the RBG that day! Here are a few pictures of this beautiful couple!
I’m happy to say I’m back at Sheridan College for a second Wedding Photography Course! Lots of things on the agenda like an engagement shoot and several wedding photo shoots that I’m looking forward to!
This week our class was in for a special treat as we had Krista Fox visit to share with us her experience as a wedding photographer, a field in which she has worked for about fourteen years now. Krista is based in Toronto but over the years has been covering a lot of destination weddings in exotic parts of the world such as the Bahamas and Costa Rica as well as New York and Tofino among other places. There is something about Krista’s work that captured me right away, something different and extraordinary. An aerial and luminous quality that draws you in but it’s also the locations in which she often photographs her couples that make her pictures stand out. One thing I learned from her that night is that sometimes you need to convince your couples to go the extra mile because, as she says it’s “just outside the comfort zone that magic is made”. And once more I realized that it’s also the time of day which can be critical to achieving that luminous and transparent look which are a trademark of Krista’s work. She often asks her couples to grant her about 15 or 20 minutes on their wedding day to take advantage of the beautiful golden light which, on clear days, you often get around two hours before sunset. Krista recently took the picture below at a destination wedding in Malibu during those golden hours of the day…and she convinced her couple - bride in a mermaid dress with a full skirt - to do some - not insignificant - rock climbing to get to this incredible vantage point! I think everyone can agree that the result was well worth the effort! I’m very proud and happy to say that finally our “Endless Possibilities” exhibition can be viewed and visited at various locations in Burlington this May and June!! The Opening Gala at Compass Point Bible Church on May 6th, was a great success and delighted subjects and their families and photographers alike!
It’s been almost a year and a half since I and several of my fellow members of the Trillium Photography Club in Burlington embarked on a very special project named Endless Possibilities. The project was inspired by PhotoSensitive, an initiative by a group of photographers seeking to enrich, enlighten and educate Canadians on issues of social significance. So what exactly is this Endless Possibilities project all about? My fellow Trillium club members and I were photographing and documenting the lives of people with developmental disabilities. Those people live life as fully as possible but may have more challenges than people without disabilities. The goal of our photographic exhibit, which, as mentioned is going up at various venues in Burlington in May and June this year, is to show that there are more similarities to the general population than differences and in that way help diminish some of the stereotypes surrounding the disabled. If you live in or around Burlington come see this very special photo exhibition! See flyer below for locations and times. Andrew has helped to create a unique and powerful ensemble of talented men and women who, through black-and-Andrew has hcreate a unique and powerful ensemble of talented men and women who, through black-and-white photography, enrich, enlighten and e Those two, what can I say? They were such amazing troopers on this sunny but very cold February day when we met at the RBG’s Arboretum for their engagement photo shoot. Both love this place with its tall beautiful trees and lookouts over the water and they come to walk here often. As Allison and Steve’s wedding is going to be during the warmer season in May they were looking forward to some snowy engagement pictures. The sunshine warmed things up at least a tiny bit so we lasted a little longer to do some fun pictures in their “Canada gear” in honour of the Olympics. Yay! I think their good spirits and cheering must have helped the Canadian teams! Thanks for a great session, Allison and Steve, I look forward to capturing your wedding day in May!
October 19th, 2013 - My first engagement shoot as part of my wedding photography course at Sheridan College. I have to admit that I was just a tiny bit nervous and…oh, alright, who am I kidding here, I was VERY, VERY nervous. A million “what if” scenarios ran through my mind. Stop it, I told myself, will you just relax and have fun?!
And fun we had! When Katie and Mark, my engaged couple, arrived at our shooting location at Sheridan, all the nervousness was suddenly forgotten. Those two were sweet and fun and both were very excited about the shoot. As their wedding is going to be in October next year they loved the idea of creating a fall picnic scene for parts of their engagement shoot. I had bought some sunflowers, dug out an ancient suitcase and a few old books and my shooting partner completed the scene with a basket of apples and grapes. Voila! Katie and Mark were great hanging in there despite the fact that the weather was damp and not exactly warm. We all had a hard time keeping a straight face when I asked Mark to read to Katie from one of the books. Trouble was they were all in German, the only vintage-looking ones I was able to find at home. Mark did his best but there were a lot of urgths, arghchs and krchgchs going on!! November 3rd, 2013 - After our engagement photo shoot two weeks ago I and everybody else from my wedding photography course at Sheridan were in for the “biggy” today: A six hour wedding photo shoot! That being said I know the veteran wedding photographers out there would without a doubt roll their eyes as a real wedding often requires you to be on your feet a lot longer than that. So this was going to be good training, right? I was excited and also nervous again but according to my course
instructor, who, by the way, is one of those veteran wedding photographers, this will never really go away. I was glad she told us that as I find it comforting to know that I’m not the only one who’s got butterflies in her stomach before a shoot. Just like with the engagement shoot everyone in the course was required to find a couple to photograph today. Everything had been in place when only a few days before my shooting partner lost her newlyweds. Oh dear…what now? After many frantic calls for help in the form of emails and phone calls to everyone we know my friend’s daughter Jasmin volunteered to be our bride during our morning shoot at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington. Jasmin is not married but I have a wedding dress I thought would never see the light of day again. The night before the shoot Jasmin tried it on. It was meant to be. Lovely girl in lovely dress. Here she is in all her glory… For the wedding photo shoot on November 3rd each of us in my wedding photography course was asked to purchase a bridal bouquet to give to our brides during the shoot. I knew I wanted to get something classy and beautiful, something that resembled the bouquet that I had on my own wedding day. I happen to love all of the different shades of white, everything from pearl to cream and ivory. The florist at Fortino’s, where I ordered the bouquet, put together a beautiful arrangement of cream coloured roses that was complemented by various delicate greens. The stem was tightly wrapped with a shiny silk ribbon that perfectly matched the colour of the roses and secured with an array of pearl topped bouquet pins. Here are some images of the pretty bouquet, some including the bride and some without…
